One of the most venerated Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, Bellanwila Temple well known to Buddhist devotees  as they flock to worship the sacred Bo tree in the Temple. A Sinhala Bodhivamsaya which records that the Bodhi-tree in Bellanwila as one of the thirty two saplings that sprang from the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi at Anuradhapura planted in the 3rd century BC. The temple is located 12 km away from Colombo This sacred place was abandoned after the Portuguese invasion of the country’s coastal areas. however Thenagodagedara Thero  rediscovered the Bo Tree and rebuild the temple  surroundings with the help of the villages.

Bellanwila Esala Festival is due this August.  Famous colorful pageant, which attracts large crowds has a history since 1947.

Temple is well organized  for devotees therefore  devotees are happy to visit the temple  this credit should go to Ven. Prof. Wimalaratne Thero who not only manages the temple, also being the Chancellor of Sri Jayawardanpura University.
