Korathota Temple, Sri Lanka

Visited on Poson Poya Day (2015-06-02).

New Buddha Statue

Korathota Raja Maha Viharaya is located at Kaduwela - Athurugiriya bus route.

The way to temple: Kaduwela - Avissawella road less than 1 km, turn right to Athurugiriya and drive 3 km. The Koratota Raja Maha Viharaya is just beside the main road however you need to climb up after parking your vehicle at temple premises .

The history says that daughter of Mahachula Tissa's has donated this cave temple to Mahasangha.
Once King Walagamba has taken refuge at this temple during South Indian Invaders. There are six caves and main cave is the main Shrine. There is a Dagaba ( pagoda) and a Boo tree.
Passing the pagoda there are some steps upwards to the new Buddha Statue constructed recently. It's one of the largest Buddha statue out of cement in this area.

Dagaba (Pagoda)

If you travel to Athurugiriya  just drop by this Koratota Temple. You will be pleased to see the new Buddha Statue located on top of the hill and great panoramic view. The temple authorities has never thought about to keep their construction in traditional way using stone and bricks to preserve temple heritage would have been great looking temple. It could be a tourist attraction. Perhaps one of the youngest priest will change his thinking pattern as nothing is permanent in this world.......
